Pointers is a series of supplemental fact sheets on various aspects of the Elementary and Second Education Act (ESEA). Written in family-friendly language, Pointers provide essential information on ESEA so that families and professionals can easily understand how this complex federal law applies to all students in public schools throughout the Commonwealth. These publications are listed in order of date published.

Rights of English Language Learners defines who an English language learner is, the rights of the parents of an English language learner, and what parents of an English language learner can do to support their child in school. Available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitan Creole, Somali, Russian, Vietnamese, and Chinese.

English Language Learners and State Assessments covers important information for students who are learning English as a second language. Families and professionals may have many questions regarding the Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment (MEPA) tests. This issues of pointers seeks to help answer those questions by providing easy to understand information. Available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian, Cape Verdean Creole, Russian, Chinese, Hatian Creole, and Vietnamese.

Helping Your Child Prepare for MCAS is a resource for all families in Massachusetts! This issue of Pointershelps families better understand the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). It also contains tips to help your child prepare for tests, and ways to help reduce test anxiety. Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Urgent Message for Parents is a call to action! this issue of Pointers will help families understand more about the available academic support services (like free tutoring) outlined in Supplemental Educational Services (SES), describe which students are eligible, and how families can ask for them. Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Working with Your School is designed to help families understand their school system and gives strategies families can use to support their children in school. Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

School Report Cards this issue gives the reader a working knowledge of school report cards and adequate yearly progress (AYP). It describes what a school report card is, and discusses how the school report card is used to determine services designed to support student academic success. Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Supplemental Educational Services Under NCLB this issue will help families understand more about the available academic support services (like free tutoring), describe which students are eligible, and how families can ask for them. Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Public School Choice Under NCLB this issue explains what public school choice is according to the federal law, discusses the importance of AYP in school choice, and other significant aspects of the law that can help families make informed decisions about where their children attend school. Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
