The Bulletin is the Massachusetts PIRC’s newsletter, which is sent to members of our mailing list four times per year. It has useful information and tips on how families can become more involved in their children’s development and education, from working with their child at home to building relationships with teachers and the school. Written in family friendly language, the Bulletin keeps families up to date on the latest changes in education across the state and the nation. These publications are listed in order of date published.

Common Core State Standards: What they mean for families and students, In July of 2010, Massachusetts agreed to adopt new national education standards. These standards, called the Common Core State Standards, were designed by experts from across the nation to prepare students for success in college and 21st century careers. This Bulletin explains what the Common Core State Standards are, why they were created, and how they will affect Massachusetts students.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten: What families can do, Kindergarten is an important learning opportunity — the beginning of REAL SCHOOL! The learning that happens in kindergarten is the foundation for all the learning that comes after it. Student Growth Percentiles: What they tell us about schools, districts, and groups of students, “Student Growth Percentiles” (SGP) is a new way of showing how students are progressing academically. Mass PIRC has written two Bulletins to help parents understand student growth percentiles.
