Mass PIRC’s work has been focused on helping families become active, effective partners in their children’s education and helping schools become places where the contributions of families are welcomed and encouraged. Facts and Figures

Over the past school year, thanks to Mass PIRC…

  • Over 220,000 families and nearly 15,000 educators, community service providers and other professionals received publications, resources, and/or in-person consultations or training through workshops and family events. The primary language of 39.5% of parents receiving Mass PIRC services was not English.

  • Over 275,000 Mass PIRC publications and materials about parental involvement were sent to families, schools, and individuals statewide of which 26.7% were in languages other than English.

  • Mass PIRC Web sites in English, Spanish and Portuguese were viewed 233,827 times and 48,205 PIRC documents were downloaded of which 52.8% were in languages other than English.

Highlights of Mass PIRC Support to Districts, Schools and Community Organizations

Here are some of the innovative ways that Mass PIRC is working with families, schools and districts, and community organizations to develop empowering partnerships with each other...

  • Consulting with Boston Public School’s Office of English Language Learners to create reader-friendly parent notifications and forms.

  • Training over 125 administrative support staff of Worcester Public Schools on how to create family- friendly schools.

  • Training new trainers in Springfield and Malden to replicate Mass PIRC workshops with families, specifically Somali refugee families and families enrolled in ESL adult education classes.

  • Planning and participating in family and community engagement activities as part of the team at a full-service community school in Holyoke.

  • Piloting a research-based tool for assessing and enhancing family and community engagement called Solid Foundation at schools in Lawrence.

  • Continuing fiscal support of early childhood parent education programs in Attleboro, Milford, New Bedford and Pittsfield.

  • Updating and translating of Mass PIRC publications on rights of English Language Learners into 8 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean, Albanian, Vietnamese, and Somali).

  • Providing information about the education system in Massachusetts to families through faith-based organizations in a program called “Six Sundays to School Success.”
